Over the last decade or two I have been able to work on a number of rather cool software projects (and an equal number of, let’s be frank, rather dull projects). Because strolls down memory lane are, on occasion, kinda fun: here is a chronological list of some of the more noteworthy (at least to me) projects I have worked on.
(Still filling this out. It may take a while.
)
“Mars.” – 1994 - I wrote my first BBS door game. And the world was changed. Forever. Or, put another way, “It was terrible and I never let anyone play it”. It was written in QB 4.5 and was just ghastly. The code was terrible. The game-play sucked eggs (it was basically a clone of Legend of the Red Dragon… on Mars). Up until this point every programming project I undertook was, more or less, left unfinished (and, usually, was not much more than a nibblesclone).
“Mars. 2.0″ – 1997 - Before I gloriously dropped out of college, my first real final in a programming class was a project of my choosing. I chose to re-write that terrible BBS game. This time I re-wrote it in C++ and made it so it was actually kinda fun. Because I am an extremely creative fellow, and the game took place on Mars, the game was simply called “Mars.”. Note that the period is part of the name. That is a testament to my creative powers. The game was put up on my BBS (only a few months before my BBS went offline) and was released as freeware and uploaded to about a dozen other BBS’s. At this point the code is long since lost. If anyone finds a copy of the game out there in the wild, let me know.
“Microsoft Wallet” – 1998 – I went to work for Microsoft. First real software job. I worked on something called “Microsoft Wallet”. It was basically an address book for storing your credit card info to make it easy to pay for stuff online. It was… not great. And it no longer exists. But I was a kid working at a giant software company, so it was a pretty big deal for me.
“Windows Media Player for Mac” – 1999 – At Microsoft again. Worked on Windows Media Player for MacOS. The version was… 6.3 I believe. Note that this was pre-MacOS X. We’re talking MacOS 8 days here. The team was small, the project was kinda fun. This was the first project I worked on that I could tell someone about and they would know what it was. That was kinda awesome.
“PhotoGenetics” & “VideoGenetics” – 2000 – Worked on porting a video and photo editor (VideoGenetics and PhotoGenetics) from MacOS “Classic” to MacOS X (which was in pre-release at the time… and everyone was very excited about pulsing blue buttons) for a small start-up called “QBeo”. The project was a great deal of fun to work on, and this gave me my first opportunity to setup and man a booth at a software trade show. Good times were had by all. Until they went out of business.
“Microsoft Office X” – 2001 – Worked on Microsoft Office for MacOS X. Back at Microsoft working on a big name project.
“DiscBlaze” – 2003 – CD and DVD burning software for MacOS X (and, eventually, Windows).
“Macabinet” – 2004? -
“DoThisNow” – ?
“RadicalCodex” -
“Illumination Software Creator” – 2010
