tomboy-128I love Tomboy.  I end up needing to take, and reference, a lot of notes throughout the day, and Tomboy is just so easy and convenient (and always there when I need it).

If you have a Gnome-based Linux destkop, you probably already have it.  And love it.  Tomboy is, as the kids these days say, “the bee’s knee’s”.

But, let’s say you’ve been using Tomboy for a few months.  Now you have a metric truckload (”Truckload” is now an official metric unit of measurement.  If it’s not… then it really should be.  *cough*someonegoeditwikipedia*cough*) of notes all sitting on your desktop (or laptop).

Sure, you could use Conduit to synchronize those notes somewhere.  But that only solves part of the problem.

What if you are away from your desk and want access to your notes?  To be able to  read them and edit them.

snowy-moneyEnter: Snowy.

Basically Snowy is a web application that you can either run on your own server (or use the upcoming free “Tomboy Online” server that will handle that for you).

Think about that for a second.

You can have your desktop note taking application sync, automagically, with an online free service.  Or you can host that service yourself on any server you like.

Maximum flexibility.  I love it.

I’m the kind of guy that likes to have full control over my own data.  So being able to host this sort of service myself is a huge win.

Major kudos to both the Tomboy and Snowy teams.  Awesome work so far.

This is really awesome, but I am a regular Evernote user, and have found their service invaluable.

You get a Mac, Windows, Web and Mobile client, which works great and helps you remember all kinds of things with tags, OCR on images, and the ability to attach any file up to 25Mb (per note).

Two drawbacks to Evernote: no Linux client, and no hyperlinking between notes.

I do like the idea of running the sync/web service on my own server, but there are those few features in Evernote that just keep me coming back, regardless of the lack of Linux client.

Hey Bryan! First of all, since this is my first comment on your blog, I have to say I like your style :) You seem to be a practical fella, with real fondness for practical stuff and a intriguing way to turn that into quality reading. So there you go, hope you don’t get too overweening (that word is off google, hope you understand what I’m trying to say here :)

    Anyway, Tomboy…

For some reason, I still don’t have that habit to use programs such is Tomboy. I keep creating text files and putting them all into a single folder. Yes, I know, I know… Perhaps I should make me a big Tomboy shortcut on my desktop so I remember to use it :)

As for online support, I think it’s a good idea. Again, google docs is what I was using for that. I promise I’ll try Tomboy!

Anyway, thanks once again for your enjoyable articles on free software!!!

    Greetings from Belgrade, Serbia!

Snowy is python script by the way. Gnote will eventually get the means to sync with Snowy. Currently Gnote is faster and lighter than tomboy.

Gnote + Snowy future. Tomboy + Snowy temp current at best.

Then finally how long before someone releases a new web base thing that does the same thing. All you need is firefox 3.5 or equal is installed and you have it where ever firefox 3.5 or equal is.

The future is going to turn strange as web and desktop merge.
