moblin_v2_netbook_betaMoblin (the project geared towards netbooks and mobile internet devices) has hit 2.0 beta.  And, based on the screenshots and feature list… it looks… really freaking slick.

I mean… check that out.  That looks pretty rad right there.

Plus, and this makes me quite happy, Moblin is making extensive use of Clutter (which is an excellent library for developing applications with rich, fast, animated interfaces).  Clutter is something I’d like to see more and more Linux Distros take advantage of, which seems to be happening in the mobile/portable space (such as with the new Maemo currently in beta).

So, if you’ve got one of the supported netbooks (MSI Wind, Dell 910, Eee 901, etc) head over and give it a whirl.

Looks pretty sweet! You really are all about the glitz on the Desktop aren’t you. :)

the end user likes glitz. why should i have to look at light beige and orange all day? one of my major loves for linux is how much more beautiful it can be than any other interface/os. front ends should inspire, not make you hate your life while getting back to writing a crappy paper or browsing depressing new.

anyway. i like it. long way to go to cover up some of those more detailed dialogs and whatnot. hopefully it sets the bar high and other follow suit

Hey it does look awesome. Imagine that. ;)

Yes nice for few minutes but Windows XP can do everything on a netbook. Nobody needs some specialized system on his computer if he can install everything that was running on his main machine with XP. People don’t want Linux!

I’m not really huge on the whole “completely anonymous” thing around here. You needn’t worry about any sort of weird backlash from using a handle or name here, man. There’s all sorts of people, who have all sorts of differing opinions. And we all, for the most part, get along just fine.

As for your point about XP… I think that misses the mark. People don’t want XP. Or Linux. Or MacOS X. People want their stuff to work and to look cool.

Whatever gets that done is going to be perfectly acceptable to the vast majority of people.

Plus, we’re not talking about desktops (or even laptops) here. Moblin is designed for MID and netbooks. Where XP isn’t really ideal. Just like XP wouldn’t be ideal on a cell phone either.

I don’t think that the whole concept of “netbook” was marketed properly at the retail outlets. The sales people I talked to tried to sell the xandros linux 701 to 901 eee pcs as “mini” laptops, when really they should have been sold as an appliance that “did” a range of tasks. This is where I think moblin will shine. If the sales staff sell the moblin netbbooks properly, we will see a large amount of netbooks of low spec being sold at the good prices of a few hundred bucks. Leaving the “high end” netbooks for dust.

Why oh why somebody should use some crippled software on his netbook when tere is XP that will give him *anything* he wants to install.

Awesome graphics. This could save you 50$ on your netbook purchase and looks better than XP in many ways.
