The latest response to my “Linux Sucks” video is from Linux Hater’s Blog.

Worth reading?  Nah.  Not really.  Basically it’s just a post insinuating that I am just ripping off his (or her?) content.  Which is… odd.  (Or lame… is it odd or lame?  I always have a hard time deciding between those two…)

santang-rambo-tux-2036But it got me thinking…

The Linux Hater’s Blog has been home to quite a bit of, well, Linux-hating over the last year or two.  With total anonymity.

When I come out and talk smack about something, I have the balls to do it with my own name.  Often with live audio and video.  And chat rooms filled with people who can disagree with me.  Then I even let people call in to the shows to disagree with me directly.

Then I get up in front of a crowd of people at a conference where they are most likely to disagree with me… and I tell it like I see it.

Time for Mr/Mrs Linux Hater to put up or shut up.

I challenge you, god sir (or madam), to a debate.  With Live audio/video.

“The Linux Hater vs. Someone with Common Sense”

Send me an email (or comment here) and we can get it set up.  We can do it in person (if we’re close enough geographically) or via Skype.  Either way is just fine by me.

I am willing to abide by whatever debate rules and format will make you the most comfortable.  And we can take care of the live streaming, etc.  All you have to do is show up.

And, I am going to be clear here: If Linux Hater does not take me up on this?  He (or she) is a total and complete coward.  It is obvious that Linux Hater follows this blog.  So I know he/she will be reading this.

Bring it.

This could be a lot of fun. Make sure you publicize the live feed so that we can get into it :)

  2. Cristian

    Nice!

I hope that guy (or lady) accept! I’d be so great!

    Bye!

  3. Andrew Jensen

Get real and who cares. When you folks have something constructive to debate, rather than recycling the same old gripes, that will be worth listening to. Bonus points if you can lower the vulgarities a notch or two, at least elevate your class levels to early adolescent. This is as dull as watching Olbermann and O’Reilly exchange the same tired old potshots over and over and over and over and over.

  4. Bryan

Andrew: Was I being vulgar towards Linux Hater? Or in the presentation video?

  5. jokkel

This is just great! Your presentation was a bit weak in places, but it’s good that you have the balls to tell everybody: “Linux sucks, and here’s why.”

Your proposed solutions don’t really work and have failed to several times. But it’s great you coined the phrase: Developers have to eat
This is the elephant in the room nobody talks about much in Linux land.

  6. Alan Pope

Good luck. It won’t happen, but good luck anyway ;)

  7. Timothy

This reminds me of when Rush Limbaugh challenged Obama to a debate. You sound whiny and this blog entry only shows how sensitive you must be, to let some anonymous person’s post on the internet get to you this much. I bet you’re going to lose sleep over it.

  8. Richard

A transparent attempt at a ‘ratings event’ for Jupiter Broadcasting while simultaneously lodging an ad hominem attack at Linux Hater. Nice! Linux Hater’s identity is irrelevant to the issue: Linux on the desktop sucks!

  9. Jadd

Well I liked the post. :)

  10. Eric

People that are slanderous behind a mask are irritating.

I think Bryan has every right to call him or her out.

    Looking forward to this!

    If it happens.

  11. Christopher Fikes

I personally loved the talk. Yes a lot of the points are obvious if you think about them, but you are a semi-public figure in the Linux community, and its nice to have people in the Linux community say what sucks about linux. I use linux at work everyday, on my laptop and on servers. I love linux, but it does suck, and we do need to fix it. I would love to see this debate, and if it happens, i would love to let others know about it so we can all learn in a constructive manner. Keep up what you do, you have a knack for stirring up things in a good way.

  12. Vikram

I completely agree that if you want to bash something that badly, you should have the guts to at least have a name or even a username for yourself. Although I doubt that they will actually get back to you, I hope that if they infact do…you make it live, so we can all get in on it :)
    -good luck

  13. messer

Every OS on the desktop suck. OMG in Windoze you can’t even dock window with the “always on the top” flag. You have to reboot your system for even trivial updates. You have to install printers through weird sequence of operations and with drivers taking hundreds megabytes of disk space.

And try 64-bit Windows - nothing suck so much as these :)

  14. Josh

Jensen is right. What exactly is it you’re going to debate? Whether linux sucks? Haven’t we all heard the OS war to death? Who the fuck cares? At least his (or her) post was funny.

  15. Time Dalkat

I bet Balmer’s regretting starting that website now.

  16. yungchin

Hey, lighten up! LHB is not about hating linux, it’s just satire - art, if you will. You can like or dislike the profane style, but you should really not take this personally. (S)he’s doing the same thing you’re doing - trying to point out the flaws that should be dealt with - but mixing in some entertainment while at it.

There’s no way it would work as well as it does if it wasn’t anonymous. I believe the writer is someone from the community, and revealing that fact would take the bite out of it all. Really, just look at http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/2008/06/how-to-write-gnome-application.html - this is someone from the community.

I think you’d agree your presentation deserved some criticism - not because you didn’t have a point, but because it’s not exactly new - or?

  17. Johan

Hehe, I like the idea. I too am curious as to what you would be debating though. However, great stuff. It’s funny having a bunch of haters writing comments on your blog. Really amusing stuff! :)

  18. Anonymous Insider

Thanks to Linux Hater I got to see part of your presentation. It’s great to have a live example of what’s discussed daily at LH’s blog.

No wonder Linux has remained unchanged at 1% in the client market share.

I think it’s time for some of you guys to adopt Mac OS X. Linux is definitely going nowhere on the desktop. Just give up!

  19. jokkel

    @Lunduke

Be glad about LH posting a link to you, he has one of the most popular linux blogs. He made you famous!

  20. hateme

The last time somebody challenged the hater he ripped him a new one. http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/2008/08/yay.html
Prepare to be embarrassed for your poor ass presentation.

  21. Mark

    Dear Bryan,

Speaking only for myself here, I would be highly surprised if LinuxHater responded to your invitation. I made myself watch about one half of your presentation, that was all I could bear before I had to take a break. Your presentation had no worthwhile content and you yourself have inadequate presenting skills. LinuxHater displays broad knowledge of Linux on his blog, as opposed to yourself who among posts on Star Trek and puppies managed to write… well to be honest the closest I’ve found to a technical article was the post where you said “That Valve post written by someone else, I agree with it.”

When someone clearly inferior in technical skill challenges someone else to a technical debate, the knowledgeable party silently ignoring the other one is not cowardice, it is proof of intelligence and reason.

  22. dontcryforme

Your last slide: Feel free to yell at me
So don’t whine when somebody does yell at you. LH works well because he is anonymous. He’s a satirist showing the linux community in a mirror. Don’t get too worked up about this.

  23. Anonymous

I don’t see why he has to give up his name. Why? So he can be found and fucked by the freetards? The clever thing here is to not give up his name. He is in a position that he shouldn’t.

I find LinuxHater’s blog entertaining, and very true. I am an occasional Linux user btw, and developer. The things he writes, while in an angry manner, are true.

  24. Not Bob

I’m sorry Mr. Lunduke, you are not that smart. The Linux Hater would put you in your place. It would be a total humiliation. I wouldn’t wish the outcome of that on anyone.

The Linux Hater is actually, a Linux fan. How else could he actually know AND explain all the bugs in Linux? He’s also a top developer for a certain GTK application(s).

You know the old saying -
Be careful what you wish for - You just might get it ;)

  25. timmywear

I want to see this too!

Just don’t mess up Bryan. Don’t let Linux down.

  26. justme

You stand no chance against him. He is superior with his knowledge.

[...] did you read http://lunduke.com/?p=526 ? It’s a battle of the sensationalist attention cravers! Maybe they’re colluding. [...]

  28. Giuseppe Maggiore

Hi! I really liked your presentation and I appreciated your presentation skills. I also really enjoy reading LH’s blog: the gracious profanity, the technical acumen - it’s a work of art!

That said, why on Earth should a challenge between the two of you be interesting? Technical discussions of any depth cannot be had in real time, there is need for thinking and gooling :) a lot. In real time all you could have is an extremely rhetoric exchange with *maybe* some insight somewhere. If you want to debate with the guy, by all means do it: with counter-examples and counter-arguments and with the least possible partisanship…

  29. Doug

Brian, if you value your reputation as a serious contributor, don’t draw attention to the LHB blog. If I didn’t know any better, I would suspect you of attempting to direct traffic to that site under the pretext of some kind of bogus controversy. And if you really want to know just who writes LHB then why not ask his good friend Miguel.

    > Hey, lighten up! LHB is not about hating linux, it’s just satire - art, if you will

LHB is about pissing all over the Open Source community, anyone by association with that blog also gets tarnished. Anyone reading that blog would run like hell. Oh, wait :)

    > I don’t see why he has to give up his name. Why? So he can be found and fucked by the freetards?

He’s happy to attack other people personally, goose gander etc ..

    > The Linux Hater is actually, a Linux fan. How else could he actually know AND explain all the bugs in Linux?

Or who ever writes his material for him. Possible the Microsoft Lunux lab :)

    keywords: freetard, crapware, luser

  30. piripicchio

You should really explain the topics of the debate. Please do it, to us and to LH, or probably you won’t get an answer.
You proposed: “The Linux Hater vs. Someone with Common Sense”.
    Wrong. Pointless.
The difference between you and LH is that LH has got: deep knowledge (really deep, buddy!), common sense (it’s the first real linux expert that discuss things *also* from the Desktop user perspective), and his writing skills, that makes him an amazing satyrical writer (not limited in linux field).
His “hate” is documented in every detail: you know what could be a good debate topic?
Go to a chat (so he can keep his reasonable anonimity) and, live, in real-time, you both give detailed, technical reasons to “why linux sucks”.
    Example: Audio.
You suggested Gstreamer. LH should explain why yes why not.
Then, LH puts OSS in the discussion (that’s my guess). You should explain why yes and why not.

That’s a reasonable debate. The debate would be about specific knowledge on the topic “why linux sucks”. Right now your debate is: “I want to be the first that will bring LH out of anonimity”. It sounds a bit as you were asking for visibility, in this way…

    Good luck to both.
    Ciao.

  31. piripicchio

I should add that I didn’t mean that you don’t have technical knowledge, but that the title “The Linux Hater vs. Someone with Common Sense” suggests that LH doesn’t have common sense, to me, which is not true.

    Ciao.

  32. Doug

    get a back.bone Bryan ..

  33. Mike

Look, uhm, Linux is a great OS and all, but a lame platform for a “publicity stunt”.

If you want attention then help, we still have loads of patches, bug-fixes, and drivers that need a lot of work.

  34. Eric

Looks like you got a lot of trolls from his/her blog. :) hehe

  35. dontcryforme

    he’s up for a debate! http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/2009/05/sigh.html

  36. Tom

Just because Linux Hater chooses to remain anonymous doesn’t completely invalidate what he is saying. There are very loud people who say that the Moon Landing was faked, does that make their argument stronger because they are very public with their identity?

You proposed such a thing because you know LH is anonymous, and would not likely agree to such a “debate” so it makes you look like you won a battle. A battle over Nothing.

In fact, there’s nothing to debate about: you both agree that linux isn’t perfect and have a lot to say about it.

  37. adante

Keep fighting the good fight Bryan. I’m a former LH fan who loved your talk. For what it’s worth he did use to have some valid points, but I’ve seen LH go from crazy-insightful-entertaining style rants to mainly just crazy. Either he’s been replaced by a different author or he has actually been driven insane by linux.

Whatever the case, keep at it. More than ever the community needs a critical appraisal. I just hope you can be heard over the vocal minority of rabid crazy freetards out there.

  38. Lunduke.com » Linux Hater is an Excuse Lover

[...] Oh good.  Linux Hater has replied to my challenge to stop being anonymous and debate me. [...]

  39. aaronlborg

I’d be totally into a live debate.

Hating Linux is one thing but hating Jupiter Broadcasting???

    C’mon…

  40. Mpak

    Mwahaha!
Asking anonymous for a fight is stupid. You already lost the battle just asking for it.

  41. Valent Turkovic

Bryan where do you check and how which Linux has how many percents of total Linux marketshare?

I don’t agree with you that we need only one package system, but here is a better answer than I could explain:
    http://www.happyassassin.net/2009/05/15/packaging-standards-again/

  42. Valent Turkovic

Bryan have you checked out http://klik.atekon.de/ ?

  43. William

This is stupid. A live debate, seriously? Linux Action Show was good for the first few seasons, but it went way downhill in the past year or so. This is a cheap publicity grab, and you’re trying to capitalize on LH’s popularity.
