Project Donation Voting

April 11th, 2009

overlord59-gemili-tux-1744Okay, so the sale is over.  And all the sales are going to an open source project… to be determined by you.

So, how were the results?

In a word: weird.

Being as people could set their own price, I figured the results would be all over the map.

From the moment I announced all the sales would be donated… things got crazy.

For the first 6 hours…. not one sale.  Which was weird, being as sales were fairly good up until that point.

Then… a flood of sales.  For between 1 cent and 1 dollar each.  Most being closer to 1 cent.

Ya know what?  That’s okay.  I let people set their own price.  I knew that would happen at least a little.

Here’s the thing though… sales under 33 cents… equate to 0 cents.  The processing fee per transaction is 33 cents… so… yeah.

The net result: $145.  (Thanks to everyone who paid more than 33 cents!)

It’s not a ton, but it’ll still be helpful to some project!

So what lucky project gets it?  Here’s a few recommendations:

GetDeb.Net – These guys package up a ton of software for Ubuntu and make it easily available.

Ardour - An absolutely amazing audio workstation package for Linux.

Linux Mint – One extremely cool (and great looking) Linux distro.

Any other project is open as well!  So cast your vote here in the comments of this thread.

    My vote goes to Ardour.

Sorry about those results. I would have bought a copy, but I don’t have any money lieing around. (I also would have felt bad downloading it for $.01, so I didn’t). But good luck on future ventures.

Linux Mint is a amazing project so i vote it

Oh, and if I’m allowed a vote, I would love to support getdeb.net. They are my one-stop-shop for great free ubuntu apps.

I would donate to Ardour. If there can be a top-of-line audio application that is better than anything on any other platform, maybe more people would switch to Linux. We need more professional-grade applications that can compete.

My vote goes to Linux Mint. I’ve reinstalled at least 30 times over the past month or 3 and I kept going back to Mint and eventually just stayed with it. Ubuntu done right.

What about the wine project? Unless you can come up with a super great reason not to give money to those guys, I’d like to see the money go there.

I payed $4 for Radical Comic Designer, and I would love to see Ardour get it. Linux Mint? Nah, we got too many distros as it is, and even though they have offered a bit of improvement over Ubuntu, a good audio tool is missing on Linux. Badly. Also, some of Linux Mints included software is from GetDeb, so.. :)

  9. Igneous

    Ardour, totally.

  10. Minter

My vote goes to Linux Mint. They put out quality work time and time again. It is great to have that everything-works distro. And Mint is supported by sponsors, donations and some ad revenue while devs are volunteers who put in a lot. I think they deserve it.

There’s a book called “Predictably Irrational” by Dan Ariely. I haven’t read it all, but I read some of the excerpts.
In the book, he tells the story where they surveyed Lawyers, asking “will you work on a Senior Citizen’s estate for $40 an hour?” All the lawyers said no. $40 ? My time is worth more than that! Weeks later, they asked the same lawyers: “would you mind doing some free pro-bono work for some people in need? It’s a group of Senior Citizens needing help with their estates.” All the lawyers said, yes. Of course, we’d love to donate help the elderly!
His point is: The moment you assign money to something, it changes the social situation drastically. Money effects the expectations for receiver and giver.
Bryan, it sounds like you did a similiar kind of experiment, whether you knew it or not.

What about the ReactOS Project? They take the Wine code, write a kernel layer compatible to NT, and make a FOSS OS binary compatible to Windows NT (NT 5.2 being the current target).

I definitely believe this project deserves the money…

I’d go for ardour, I’ve used the other two and I know how awesome they are, but we *really* need some awesome audio software.
