Sci-Fi to become SyFy. WHUT.

March 16th, 2009

DUDE.

According to the NY Times, this coming July, the SciFi Channel is going to change its name to…. wait for it…

“SyFy”

SERIOUSLY

I mean.  HUH.

I really am just freaking done with new company and brand names that are made up of nothing more than “funny spellings” and “nonsense words that sound silly”.   Freaking done.

First the Sci-Fi channel takes Battlestar Galactica and adds in Baby showers and discussions of which retirement homes have the best brochures (seriously, the most recent episode is about exactly that)…

And now they take the “Sci Fi” out of their name entirely.

Weak.  Sauce.

Cable T.V. science fiction is out. Web video science fiction is in. Doesn’t have the budgets, but at least online producers have interesting ideas. Check it out when you’re ready for more bite than “the scifi beach party show”…

What I think is funnier is that they didn’t just pull this name out of thin air. They actually bought it!

There was a site for like 10 years called Syfy Portal, and last month they suddenly changed their name to Airlock Alpha. Coincidence?

CNet claims this is because they want to own the trademark of the channel, and because Sci-Fi is a very generic name, voila! SyFy.

In Polish, it is the plural for the word which means dirt, filth, grime, pimple, spot, and…syphilis.

    Sounds appropriate to me.

Jeff Jones: read the Airlock Alpha forums, Alpha Lounge, message thread “SciFi -> SyFy”. You hit it right on the head. :-)

Bryan: Check out this scifi animation from 2001 called Broken Saints…
