Getting Started With eBooks

February 17th, 2009

Now that Linux as the best eBook reader/organizer in the world… let’s talk about eBooks.

There are many (many) places online to find free eBooks.  And when I say “free” I mean “100% legal, free eBooks”.  These include books distributed under Creative Commons (or other similar license) or where the copyright has long since expired (such as some of the old classic novels).

But there are two that I’d like to recommend today:

ManyBooks

ManyBooks.net has over 23,000 books available and categorized.  Find the book you want to read, choose the format (I recommend PDF), and hit download.  This site is one of my personal favorites.

Creative Commons Book List

Over on Creative Commons site, they have a list of books that use this license as well as lists of other resources available.  If you’re a supporter of Creative Commons (and I think a lot of us are), this is worth checking out.

I also would like to recommend two specific authors who have released some of their works under Creative Commons: Cory Doctorow and Rick Dakan (who you can listen to my interview with here).  From their websites you can download PDF’s of some of their excellent novels.  Highly recommended.
