RadicalCodex 1.0 Beta 2

February 7th, 2009

radicalcomicfullOne week (to the day) since Beta 1 hit, and we now have Beta 2 of the Comic/eBook reader/organizer for Linux.

Here’s a quick rundown on what’s new in Beta 2 and, following that, what’s in store for Beta 3 (which is right around the corner).

  • The name changed to RadicalCodex.
  • You can now read comics in full screen mode.
  • You can now customize the look of… just about everything (the cover view, the reader view, etc.).
  • There is now a menu bar on the comic/ebook reader window.
  • Many improvements to page turning control (scroll wheels, arrow keys, pageup/down, etc.).
  • The toolbar, when reading a book, can now be hidden.
  • You can now set the current comic page to your desktop background (Gnome only for the moment).
  • A new “Go To Page” menu that is much easier to use.
  • Improved support for weirdly structured .cbr and .cbz files.
  • Lots of other tweaks and bug fixes.

As you can see, things are moving full steam ahead!  So, what’s next?  Here’s what’s on the schedule between now and Beta 3:

  • New packages for different distros (Fedora, etc.).  This is thanks in large part to a very cool guy who I will sing praises of shortly.
  • Additional features focused on organizing and backing up books.
  • eBook formats.

setasbackgroundYep.  Starting with Beta 3, RadicalCodex will be moving beyond just comic books into eBooks.  (Then, in Beta 4, into eBook device syncing… more on that later.)

You can grab the Ubuntu package from the RadicalCodex site.

And, of course, you can purchase a copy of RadicalCodex at the online store for $15 (USD).  After the beta cycle is over this price will rise to $25.  Just a nice little discount for everyone helping to provide feedback on RadicalCodex during beta.
